Burgon Society

The Burgon Society is UK-based learned society devoted to the study of academical dress and regalia – design, history and practice around the world. My dissertation, "A Brief History of Academic Dress in the Middle East and the Maghreb," awarded me fellowship in the society. I have also written "The Curious Case of a Woman’s Academic Collar," published in the peer-reviewed Transactions journal. I am currently an Executive Committee member.

Didactic Marginalia in BL Stowe 17

One of the most marginal image-rich books of hours is British Library Stowe 17. 6 Filled with a total of 1,033 images, a majority of which are carefully planned and executed marginalia, there are a few marginal images which scholars have used to support their respective arguments. However, as a whole collection of marginal images, Stowe 17 has never been studied in its entirety. I correct this oversight and show through a codicological study that throughout Stowe 17 there is one, unifying didactic purpose to the marginalia.
